The supermarket chain’s commercial director Mark Williamson said: “Last week Waitrose was trading against an excellent week’s performance in the previous year, when we saw double-digit growth driven by strong promotional activity and a spell of great summer weather.”

Preparations for the FIFA World Cup Final on Sunday drove sales of ready meals and ready to cook meals up 18% and 13% respectively. Pizza sales were strong too, up 17% year-on-year.

Pupils took the time to thank their teachers as the school year came to an end, with bottle gift bags proving particularly popular this year, up 44%, and sales of giftwrap soaring by 29%.

As the Commonwealth Games approach, the England Test Match Series continues and the summer holidays begin, celebratory buying trends continue. Sales of fizz were up 19%, sparkling wine saw a 42% rise year-on-year and desserts were up 15%.
