Independent Retailer Month is a campaign that runs annually throughout July to highlight the role that smaller independent retailers play in the communities they serve, the local economy they contribute to, and in the retail sector as a whole.

The campaign aims to: ‘impact the independent retail sector with activities and events that connect consumers and communities with local businesses, and engage their interest in – and understanding of- the benefits of shopping with local, independent brands’.
Examples of activities include a directory of independent retailers to make it easy for shoppers to find their local independent shops. The free listing allows consumers to search by town and postcode and provides regular social media promotion for retailers with a Twitter account.
The organisers say that while the campaign runs for just a month, the vision is to help change consumer habits for the long term, creating more sustainable towns and communities.
