British Hardware Federation reveals 2015 award winners

The BHF is the national trade association for independent hardware and DIY retailers in the UK and is a specialist division of the British Independent Retailers Association (bira).

The Awards were established in 2005 to recognise and reward excellence within the hardware industry. Bira ceo Alan Hawkins said: “They have grown in strength from year to year and are supported by retailers and suppliers in the trade.”

The winner of the British Hardware Federation Supplier Of The Year category is Stax. Bira said: “Members were unanimous in voting this company a worthy winner. Although only joining bira direct [which uses the combined purchasing power of over 7,000 members of bira to negotiate better buying terms for them] last April, their business with members has grown and grown. This company’s wholesale depots and cash & carry warehouses offer genuine trade wholesale support for independent retailers and trade professions across the UK.” The range includes tens of thousands of products from housewares, hardware, DIY, gardens, tools, work wear, electricals, plumbing, kitchens and bathrooms.

The British Hardware Federation Best Garden Product 2015 is Provado Ultimate Bug Killer by Bayer: a contact and systemic action insecticide that offers a broad spectrum of pest control. It is suitable for use on all outdoor ornamental plants, selected vegetables, fruit trees and bushes, offering up to six weeks’ control of a wide range of pests. Members said: “This sells very well and provides very good business.”

The British Hardware Federation Best Tool Product 2015 is The Ferm Range by Specialist. Members said this is an “excellent quality” product. The company was founded in 1970, and has since then gained extensive experience supplying DIY retailers, builders’ merchants and garden centres. It aims to provide a durable, reliable range of products at affordable prices.

The winner of the British Hardware Federation Best DIY Product 2015 is Sugru. Members said the product is “both excellent and a good seller; a great household solution.”

Finally, the British Hardware Federation Retailer of the year 2015 is The Tool Shop. Suppliers were asked to nominate their top retailer for 2015 using the criteria of business etiquette, professionalism, store ambience and reputation. The business was established in 1997 and the first premises now forms the central core of a group that boasts 11 stores across central London plus a central warehouse. It employs 40 staff and stocks a sku count of over 17,000.

BHF said: “The Tool Shop prides itself on having well trained, committed and empowered staff, delivering high quality customer service. A strong involvement in industry and a green trading policy are two of their key strengths.”
