BHS.com says Black Friday shoppers plan to spend more this year

New research from BHS.com reveals one in five people (21%) plan to spend more on Black Friday this year than they did on the event in 2015.

Just 9% intend to spend less. On a regional basis, one in three Londoners (32%) plan to spend more and 8% expect to buy less. This is followed by the East of England, where the corresponding figures are 24% and 8%.

BHS.com commissioned market research company Viewsbank to survey 1,046 people about their Black Friday shopping intentions. Interviews were conducted online and took place between November 10 and November 13.

The research showed that 58% of people plan to take part in the annual retail shopping bonanza.  Of those that intend to spend more than last year, 38% say their increased expenditure will be £100 or more.

BHS.com’s research also identified particular product areas that customers will be focusing on: 73% of Black Friday customers will be buying electronic goods; 52% women’s fashion items and 39% men’s fashion.  More than a third (36%) plan to purchase home furnishings.

However, the findings revealed that more people will be doing their Black Friday shopping online this year.  Of those planning to buy something, 58% expect to do more online than last year and just 6% intend to buy less this way.

David Anderson, managing director of BHS.com, said: “Our research suggests that retailers are going to be busier this Black Friday than they were last year, with customers buying more and spending greater amounts.  However, there may be less footfall as more shopping is carried out online.

“Online shopping is growing rapidly in the UK and this is a key reason why we felt it was viable to relaunch BHS as an online retailer in this country.  Before we went into administration we had around 1.2 million loyal online customers, and our experience so far is that they are very happy buying online and are very flexible in how they do this.  Over 60% of our purchases are now made on mobile devices.”

Since relaunching at the end of September, BHS.com has rolled out a number of lines to build momentum in the UK retail market. It currently offers lighting, kitchen dining, bedroom and bathroom ranges, and a selection of men’s and women’s clothing.

The retailer is offering a range of Black Friday special offers including 50% off all hampers, 25% off all gifts and 60% off Freshwash bedding.
