BHETA shares the latest on packaging with members

BHETA is to host a series of webinar events on the latest position on packaging including the legal position, specific retailer requirements and potential solutions and strategies for member companies. The series kicks off with an update from BHETA business service provider, Wastepack following the HMRC’s introduction of the plastic packaging tax on April 1st. This event takes place on Tuesday 3rd May at 10.30 am. The legislation now in force sets out the base line that most packaging that has less than 30% recycled content is subject to a tax levy of £200 per tonne.

BHETA, Wastepack and members worked together extensively lobbying Government to ensure that the tax was administered in the fairest way possible and as a result, HMRC adopted guidance that has helped ensure that the measures implemented have had the smallest effect possible on BHETA members. Now Paul Van Danzig, Policy Director of Wastepack will provide an overview of what has changed one month on from the start of the tax, how the tax is working and how it may affect individual businesses. The event will provide the perfect opportunity for companies not sure if they need to comply with these regulations to find out if they are affected and what they need to do about it. Following the 20 minute presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to pose questions directly to Paul.

BHETA will follow up on this event with a webinar with Tesco on May 24th looking at how this pioneering retailer is implementing its own packaging strategy. It will also be scheduling an advisory session with a packing consultant and supplier to explore options in the light of all the above.

While these are BHETA member-only events, non-members who would like to attend can contact Keeley Vernon, BHETA’s sector manager for DIY and garden on 07398 840418, or Seema Grantham, BHETA’s sector manager for housewares and small domestic appliances on 07946 078566.

BHETA’s marketing manager, Steve Richardson commented, “Sustainability is a critical topic from every point of view and packaging solutions are a big part of the solution, and of the debate. In other words it is vital for all suppliers to get packaging right for the future and this series of events, of which there will be more, is an excellent way for BHETA members to ensure they are up to speed, and ideally ahead of the game.”
