Bentalls of Kingston-upon-Thames in Surrey turns 150 today (Thursday, July 20).
To commemorate this milestone birthday, the department store has planned four days of celebrations.
An exhibition opens on the second floor today, focused on the history of the store, with materials from the retailer’s archives featuring photographs, newspaper cuttings and more. In the evening, entertainment and complimentary refreshments will be provided on the second floor from 5pm to 8pm.
Meanwhile, members of the British Sugarcraft Guild will begin to build and construct a giant birthday cake in the Living Kitchen on the ground floor, which should be ready to eat by Sunday. And the restaurant on the third floor will be offering Victorian-inspired dishes from a ‘memory lane’ menu.
On Saturday (July 22) on the lower ground floor, shoppers will be able to enjoy chocolate from Charbonnel & Walker, biscuits from Cartwright & Butler and see the new bespoke box of chocolates from Urban Village Chocolate, created especially for Bentalls’ birthday. There will also be a Punch & Judy puppet show on the third floor, along with magicians from Marvin’s Magic and children’s crafting workshops with One Generation.
Other attractions over the four days include a special appearance from local artist Raph Thomas, the chance to meet the ViSpring embroiderer and Peter Guild upholsterer, watch-engraving on Fossil purchases and pet accessory personalisation with Teddy Maximus.
Offers include 10% off on any LG screen, £150 off any order on Furniture on Beds over £1500 and a prize draw.
