Alistair McAuley is named bira Charitable Champion

Recognition of the charitable work of independent retailers and their suppliers has been a feature of the bira (British Independent Retailers Association) awards for several years.

The 2016 bira Charitable Champion is Alistair McAuley of Akzo Nobel. He received his prize from Nigel Hicks of sponsor Towergate Insurance at the bira High Street Conference on May.11.

The judges said: “This is a man who is currently in his fourth year of fundraising for his chosen charity. In this time he has managed to raise almost one million pounds. Fundraising activity has included cycling across the UK, running the Three Peaks and the 186 mile London Revolution.”

Alastair was presented with £1,000 to donate to a charity of his choice.

The judges were so impressed with all the charitable work that members are doing that they found it difficult to choose a winner in this category. As a result, they decided to present three extra Highly Commended awards with £500 each for their worthy causes to Eclettico, Fashion Fabrics and Lords.
