Waitrose shoppers sate healthy appetites – and get prepped for Burns Night

Weekly sales excluding fuel at Waitrose were up 1.3% last week (to Saturday January 20) compared with the same week last year.

The supermarket chain’s customer director Martin George said shoppers looking to increase their fruit and vegetable intake showed a healthy appetite for the retailer’s newly launched range of meat lines, which contain added vegetables and grains.

These include Pork, Butternut Squash, Quinoa & Kale Sausages; Harissa Chicken; Cauliflower Rice; and Chickpea Meatballs. He added: “Demand for our vegetarian ranges was also strong, with vegetarian frozen ready meals particularly popular.”

In the drinks aisle, malt whisky sales were strong – which Martin noted was indicative that preparations were already underway for Burns Night on Thursday (January 25). “We are also seeing the trend for low alcohol wines continue,” he said.

Waitrose has pledged to remove all black plastics from its own-label packaging by the end of next year – which it claims is the earliest date which any supermarket has committed to removing black plastics from their shelves.
