Total sales for Waitrose. excluding fuel, were 3.3% higher last week (to Saturday July 14) than last year.
The grocer’s supply chain director Wim van Aalst said: “The warm weather and sporting events led to strong sales of foods suited to entertaining and spending time outdoors. This included our ranges of beer and cider, which saw a boost of 39% and 28% respectively. Shoppers also bought 27% more gin and 135% more ice cubes.To eat, highlights included barbecue meats, which were up by 40%, salads (up 11%) and our World Deli range (up 34%).”
Over the week, the supermarket retailer sold 38% more rosé wine than the same week last year. It also launched a frozen rosé ice lolly to meet the trend for ’frosé’. The Mirabeau Frosé Popsicles (£2.99 each) are made from a blend of Classic Mirabeau rosé wine and strawberry essence.
