Waitrose shoppers celebrate long bank holiday weekend

Total sales for Waitrose, excluding fuel, were up 1.7% last week (to Saturday April 29) compared with the same week last year.

The supermarket chain’s finance director Loraine Woodhouse said: “A week of mixed weather didn’t dampen shoppers’ enthusiasm for alfresco dining, as sales of barbecue meats increased by 56% and salads rose by 8%.”

She commented that customers also celebrated the long bank holiday weekend, as sales of beer and spirits increased by 10% and 14% respectively.

And she added that “sales of croissants and other pastries, ideal for a lazy brunch, saw an uplift in sales of 8.6%”.
