Waitrose customers turn to cooler weather options

Divisional sales at Waitrose excluding fuel were down last week (to Saturday August 18) to 1.1% compared with the same week last year.

Jo Walmsley, personnel director of the supermarket chain, said: “Customers turned to cooler weather options as the summer sunshine begins to wane. Sales of slow-cooked meat dishes rose by 14% and Italian ready meals [which are part of Waitrose’s Taste of Italy promotion, with 20% off selected Italian food] increased by 18%.

“Vegan products continue to thrive as sales rose by 70%, with dairy-free drinks also seeing strong sales, up 31%.”

Jo added: “The cheese counter was a destination for shoppers last week, with sales up 9.5%, and World Deli (a range of sharing dishes from around the globe) saw a sales increase of 11%.”
