Valentine’s Day fever at Waitrose

Divisional sales excluding fuel at Waitrose were up 1.7% last week (to Saturday February 10) compared with the same week last year.

The supermarket group’s supply chain director Wim van Aalst said customers were making preparations for Valentine’s Day, with Champagne sales up 24%, strawberry sales up 11%, flowers up by more than 28% and gifting cupcakes up by 91%.

Elsewhere, speciality beer sales increased by more than 27% and spirit sales continued to grow with gin sales up by 14%, rum sales up by 11% and imported whiskey sales up by 29%.

Fruit had “an excellent week”, with stone fruit sales up 17%, sales of raspberries and blackberries both up 28% and blueberry sales up 53%.
