John Lewis finished last week (to April 23) with total sales of £73.7m, up 0.8% year-on-year.
John Lewis At Home head of selling Liz Mihell said the performance was a reflection of a competitor’s promotion in the same week last year, and of the weather being distinctly colder than this time last year.
Sales in Home were up 6.3%, with furniture sales up 15.8%. Liz commented: “As the nation celebrated HM the Queen’s 90th birthday, our Great British gifts sold well with gift food up 21.1%.”
Electricals and Home Technology (E&HT) performed well, with sales up 9% thanks in part to communication technology, which was up 26.2%. Tablets, computers and mobile phones continue to drive sales in this area. But fashion sales finished the week down 10%.
