Squires show thrives on back of baking boom

The resurgence of all things cake related guaranteed the success of Squires Kitchen’s recent 25th anniversary Cake Decorating, Chocolate and Sugarcraft Exhibition.

Squires show thrives on back of baking boom

Held over three days between March 11 and 13 at Farnham Maltings in Surrey, the event was “very, very busy”, according to Squires, attracting hundreds of people every day.

The exhibition puts on a huge number of cake displays and demonstrations, and gives visitors the chance to try new skills themselves. Amongst the techniques revealed were working in chocolate, making the perfect cupcakes and sugar flowers, and figure modelling.

There is also an annual cake decorating competition which this year received the most entries ever.

A major attraction was a portrait of soon-to-be-wed Prince William and Kate Middleton, made entirely of jelly beans.

Said its creator, Malcolm West: “I use all 50 official flavours of Jelly Belly beans as they give me a full palette of colours. I treat each bean like a gem. Laying each one of over 10,000 beans is a very painstaking process, but the effect is very exciting.”
