Shoppers prepare to dust off barbecues this weekend

Waitrose & Partners revealed today (Friday April 18) that it is stocking up on barbecue food ahead of the long weekend, as a mini heatwave of up to 24 degrees is predicted.

The supermarket chain forecasts that sales of burgers will rise by 170% compared with last year, with sales of kebabs and steaks set to rise by 150% and sausages by 25%.

Orders of other summer staples, including ice cream, salads, dips and bags of ice have also been increased, to ensure shoppers are equipped for the sunny long weekend.

While seasonal sales increase ahead of the four-day break, it appears that shoppers will also be cooking the traditional Easter meal of lamb on Sunday, as sales of the meat are up 20% compared with last year.

Waitrose & Partners executive chef Jonathan Moore said: “Roast lamb is a classic Easter dish but lamb also works perfectly on the barbecue for a deliciously smoky twist on a roast dinner.  Make sure you cook a larger joint of meat low and slow over an indirect heat to ensure it stays perfectly tender.”
