Both Sainsbury’s and Marks & Spencer have reported a strong Christmas trading period.

The supermarket enjoyed a record festive season, with like-for-like sales up 3.7% and total sales up 6.2%, excluding petrol, in its third quarter. Sainsbury’s attracted 1m more customers each week over the period, with a record 24m consumers in the stores in the week to Christmas Eve.

Sales of non-food at Sainsbury’s grew over four times faster than food in the quarter.

Meanwhile, Marks & Spencer grew like-for-like sales by 0.8% over Christmas, with total sales up 2.3%. Clothing sales were up 4% but home dropped 0.7%. Food sales put on 1.3%.

The company also enjoyed a 32% rise in online sales.
