Record week for small electricals at John Lewis

Total sales for John Lewis fell 0.5% to £96.2 million last week (to Saturday June 24) compared with last year, due to the timing of its Clearance sale.

The department store group’s director of shop trade Maggie Porteous said EHT (Electricals & Home Technology) sales for the week were strong, rising by 9.8%.

She noted that it was a record week for small electricals, as sales of fans continued to soar due to the hot weather across the UK.

Mobile and photography also enjoyed a strong week, with sales up 46.4% driven by an offer on the new red iPhone. Apple also helped drive a sales uplift of 13.3% in tablets and computers, with the new iPad proving popular.

While sales in the Home category were down 11.3%, outdoor living was up 39% as customers made the most of the hot weather to spend time outside.

Fashion was up 1.5% with both mens’ and womens’ casualwear seeing double digit growth. Sales within the swimwear and nightwear category were also up, seeing an uplift of 26.5%, as customers prepared for their summer holidays. Beauty also had a good week, with sales rising by 9.8%.
