Poor weather hits John Lewis weekly sales

Sales at John Lewis for last week (to Saturday December 16) totalled £171.4 million – down 0.6% on the same week last year.

The department store group’s director of shop trade Maggie Porteous commented: “Adverse weather and heavy snow across the country saw fewer people head outside to shop – impacting all categories.  However, trade picked up towards the end of the week.”

Home sales were down 2.2% on last year but picked up as the week progressed, particularly for the Christmas and Gift Food product categories. The cold weather continued to propel sales in bedding and heating, which were up 7.6% and 281% respectively.

Sales of electricals and home technology were up 1.5%, driven by sales in Smart Home. Promotions from Google and Amazon proved popular, as did Star Wars merchandise which the retailer launched last week.

While Fashion sales were down 1% on last year, own brand had a strong week (+7.6%) while cashmere (+31%) and men’s knitwear saw record weeks.
