Wedding celebrations spark baking bonanza
Sales of cake tins soared in the run-up to last week's royal wedding as people prepared to mark the occasion with celebratory teas and street parties.
Bakeware was a big royal wedding beneficiary
According to The Independent, the marriage of Prince William to Kate Middleton gave the already booming bakeware market an extra boost, while sandwich making came to the fore as well.
Argos told the newspaper that sales of cake tins and baking accessories had gone up 292%, with items such as cake stands and cookie cutters being especially big sellers.
Makers of the classically classy cucumber sandwich helped sales of cucumbers at Waitrose rise by half on the same time last year. And at John Lewis, sales of Emma Bridgewater Union Jack napkins leapt 246% as the wedding day approached.
