by Jane Oliphant - Retailers could be forgiven for feeling pretty angry about the way government is going about tackling the problem of knife crime.

by Jane Oliphant - I really enjoyed talking to David Odell, who jointly owns Odell's ironmonger's in Stony Stratford, a couple of weeks ago. He and his brother have developed an old outbuilding they own next to the shop and opened up a little cookshop in it. They'd always done kitchenware before, but David told me that giving it its own focus and adding in some new ranges had sent takings through the roof - they're about 500% up on what they had been.

by Jane Oliphant - Feeling confused about Christmas? No, I'm not talking about whether this year's seasonal window display should be green and red or black and gold, or what the top gadget stocking filler will be - or even whether to forget the turkey order this year and go down the pub instead.

by Jane Oliphant - Forget all the frequently-contradictory figures put out by the likes of the Office for National Statistics, the British Retail Consortium, the big mortgage lenders, etc, etc. Consumer confidence is on the up, and that's guaranteed, according to Mintel's latest report on the bottled water market.
