John Lewis weekly sales up 4.7%

John Lewis posted total sales of £85m last week (to July 9), up 4.7% on last year.

Director of operations Dino Rocos said trade was boosted by the department store group’s continuing Clearance offers and strong sales of warm weather products.

Home posted sales up 1.7% compared with last year. Home Accessories and Gifts had a strong week, up 6% on last year and Beds were particularly popular. Summer Clearance and Special Buy products within Home also continued to sell well.

EHT (Electricals & Home Technology) was up 3% on last year. Audio was one of the strongest performers up 14.4%, driven by sales of headphones as people prepare for their summer holidays. Communication Technology also had a good week up 15.4%, with tablets selling well.

Fashion sales were 9.6% on last year. Womenswear and Menswear both had a good week, with branded Womenswear up 23.3% and Menswear up 12.6% on last year. Sales of warm weather items also picked up with sandals and sunglasses selling well.
