Department store group John Lewis has revealed its top five design predictions for 2017.
Head of Design Philippa Prinsloo has commented on the insights: “Spring will see a continuation of our love and appreciation of nature – whether through the country lifestyle, by embracing the uplifting beauty and colour of indigenous flowers found in the UK, or through the contemporary progressive adaptation of our homes, to create a flow between indoors and outdoors.
“Dakara, our high summer trend, will take us through to winter. This trend includes brass finishes and pompom adorned cushions and throws, inspired by global influences.”
Bringing the outdoors indoors
“Bringing a touch of nature into our living spaces will create a contemporary design statement. Cacti will be the pot plant of choice and for the less green-fingered, faux plants will continue to be a popular alternative.
“The Leckford collection, inspired by John Lewis founder John Spedan Lewis, brings a fresh and fashionable look to this collection, showcasing the beauty of flowers and the positive impact they have on wellbeing.”
Timeless wood
“Engineered wood and laminates will bring an air of natural sophistication into our homes. Floors are durable and room dividers will lend flexibility to how we use our space. Wooden wall coverings will bring new meaning to the feature wall, and wood-effect wallpaper will become more popular than ever.”
Brass is the new copper
“Metallic finishes on light fittings, tech gadgets and decorative pieces will dim their sheen as we embrace a more matte appearance and herald the revival of brass.”
Introducing the ‘Open Home’
“Next month John Lewis will unveil a collaboration with designer partnership Doshi Levien to launch a furniture range based around the ‘Open Home’ philosophy.
“Working on the principle that furniture isn’t static and that modern rooms are flexible, each product is designed to enable you to define a space with the furniture, which is beautiful from every angle.”
Essence of the souk
“Pompoms will feature everywhere: on throws, sheers, rugs and more. Global textile influences abound, with rugs handmade from recycled, reclaimed saris, exquisite storage baskets and embroidered floor cushions.”
