Home sales up 3% at John Lewis

John Lewis’ total sales for last week (to Saturday August 19) were up 5.7% and, as in the previous week, sales of all departments grew faster than in the same week last year.

Alison Smith, the department store group’s head of shop trade for the south and west, said home sales were up 3. “The changing weather encouraged sales of bedding and lighting and we also saw an increase in furniture and flooring sales,” she commented.

Electrical and Home Technology sales were up 8.2%. Alison noted that parents preparing for children going back to school and off to university helped drive a 13% increase in year-on-year sales of communications technology products such as computers and iPads.

Fashion sales were up 7.3%, mainly due to summer products being marked down, and the cooler weather driving demand for new season warm clothing.
