The trend is in stark contrast to the recent fortunes of wine, sales of which have rocketed over the last 10 years. According to research company Nielsen, the market grew 6% to £5.6bn in the year to end February.

Sales are now in dramatic reverse, down 5% in the month to May 17 compared to the same period in 2007. The fall is equivalent to around 4.5m bottles.
