Ben Phillips
Ben took over as managing director of Steamer Trading Cookshop, one of the UK’s most respected independent cookshop chains, in 2001 from his parents Liz and David,
who started the business in 1985.
The first Steamer Trading Cookshop opened on the site of the former ‘Steamer Inn’ in Alfriston, Sussex, hence the name. Since then the business has grown to 16 branches across eight counties, with plans for 30 stores by 2011. Ben brought with him an impressive CV when he joined the family business. An investment banker by profession, he latterly held the managing director position at Credit Suisse First Boston. And, since he took the helm, the company has seen an enviable average sales growth of 52% per annum. Each store has a completely different look and feel because the company deliberately searches out unusual and interesting buildings, from a Victorian railway station in Heathfield to a converted church hall in Brighton. However, depth and breadth of range are a key element to all the stores and have made Steamer Trading Cookshop one of the most admired independent chains amongst its customers and fellow retailers alike.
