Booze, turkey and pumpkin pie perform well at Waitrose

Total sales excluding fuel were up by 1.3% at Waitrose last week (to November 26) compared with last year.

The strongest performance came from the supermarket chain’s beers, wines and spirits category, which was up by 4.5%.

Marketing director Rupert Thomas said: “Our turkey orders were up by nearly a third for the week compared with last year as many chose to celebrate Thanksgiving.

“The traditional American holiday (Thursday November 24) is becoming increasingly popular here – either with families who have links to the US, or with people who appreciate the opportunity to bring family and friends together.

“Recipe searches on Waitrose.com for pumpkin pie were up 134%, and we sold a third more pie cases last week, as many chose to bake the pudding traditionally associated with the occasion.”
