‘Bake Off’’s Martha Collison makes cookbook debut

‘The Great British Bake Off’ star Martha Collison launched her first cookbook this week.

‘TWIST: Creative Ideas to Reinvent Your Baking,’ was published yesterday (July 14) by HarperCollins.

The young British baker and recipe writer appeared as a contestant on the 2014 BBC series of ‘The Great British Bake Off’. As the youngest ever contestant to date, aged just 17, she managed to make it all the way to the quarter-finals while studying for her AS levels.

She now writes a weekly column for free supermarket weekly newspaper ‘Waitrose Weekend’, demonstrates at festivals and bakes at high profile events. She has also worked with high profile brands such as Cadbury and Mars.

She has appeared in many in YouTube videos made for Waitrose, Cadbury and her own brand videos, amassing over 1.5 million views. She has voiced her opinions about baking on several radio programmes including BBC Radio 4, BBC Berkshire and BBC Solent. Martha has also appeared on ‘Blue Peter’, ‘The One Show’, Comic Relief related media, ‘BBC Breakfast’ during at 21 hour charity bakeathon and ‘Bake Off: An Extra Slice’.

In her first book, Martha aims to offer a new ‘twist’ on baking by demonstrating how to take basic recipes and adapt them into something new. Whether it’s a cake, a biscuit or pastry recipe, she shows how to alter the method, the balance of ingredients or the mixture of flavours.

She told ‘Waitrose Weekend’: “I wanted to create a new approach to baking. It can almost be simplified down to the idea that you only really need one good recipe to be the base of all your bakes. There are so many books that tell you 10 different ways of making a chocolate cake, for example, but surely one has to be the best way? So I’ve spent a long time researching the best methods and ingredients, and then I’ve added flavours and textural twists to make it more interesting.”

For example, readers can transform her Never-Fail Vanilla Cupcakes into Lemon Cheesecake Cupcakes or Caramel Macchiato; try Pink Grapefruit Drizzle Cake instead of the usual Lemon and then mix it up with Gin & Tonic flavours; or take macarons to a new level by trying Peach Bellini Macarons or Macaron Shell Ice-Cream.
